Public Ips

Easily deploy a public IP to your SIM card, directly from the Simbase dashboard.

A SIM card with a public IP address is a SIM card that is assigned a unique, publicly-routable IP address. This allows devices connected to the cellular network via the SIM card to be directly accessible from the internet.

This type of SIM card is typically used in Internet of Things (IoT) applications, such as remote monitoring and control of industrial equipment, mobile video cameras and/or devices using VPN services.

Having a public IP address on the SIM card allows devices to communicate with each other over the internet. This can simplify the architecture and reduce the cost of deploying IoT solutions.

Assign a public IP

Background information

By default, our SIM cards reside behind a firewall that does not allow any incoming traffic from the internet. Some users want to access their hardware remotely via public IP addresses. If you click the button 'Assign Fixed IP' in our platform, all incoming and outgoing traffic of that SIM will be routed via a dedicated gateway with a fixed public IP address. The public IP of that gateway is the IP you see on the platform. To make this setup more secure, you can assign inbound firewall rules, for the firewall of that gateway. If no additional filtering is required, just select:

  • Type: All traffic

  • Protocol: All

  • Port Range: 0-65535

  • Source: 0.0.0.0/0

This rule states that all incoming traffic is accepted. If you then click 'Assign Public IP' the following happens:

  • A dedicated gateway with a public IP is created in our mobile core.

  • The firewall rules that you filled in will be assigned to the firewall of that gateway.

  • All traffic from the SIM will be routed via this gateway.

  • All incoming traffic from the internet on the gateway will be forwarded to the SIM.

If the SIM is already in use, please reboot your device (or reset the connection), because the changes take effect when the device starts a new data session. The APN is the same as for normal setups. Please check the overview below.

Considerations

Things to note:

  • Make sure to restart the data connection on your device after deploying the public IP

  • It can take up to 2 minutes for the gateway to deploy. Wait for the gateway to fully deploy. Do not make any changes or re-deploys.

  • You can make changes to the firewall by clicking the 'Manage Fixed IP' button, but only after the IP is fully deployed.

  • Please note that your device also has a built-in firewall that is beyond our control. It is best to disable it or allow all source IPs on the appropriate ports. Please consult your hardware manufacturer in case of problems.

  • Just like outbound traffic is billable, inbound traffic is also billable, so please note that if anybody on the internet accesses your device remotely, the inbound data usage is billed.
